Guide To New Jersey State Temporary Disability Benefits

Temporary disability benefits include temporary disability insurance which provides cash benefits to the workers who have had to stop working die to a certain physical or mental health condition or any other disability unrelated to their work. Your healthcare provider will have to certify clearly as to how much time is needed for you to recover from your medical condition. The time period can last up to a maximum of 26 weeks. Additionally, if your healthcare provider mentions that you will be unable to work due to high risk of COVID-19 due to an underlying health condition, you may be then eligible for New Jersey State temporary disability benefits. Most of the employers are required to have this insurance for their employees.

Employers have the flexibility to choose between an insurance plan offered by the state or by a private insurance company. Make it a point to ask your employer which coverage you have. If you are under the state plan, you can apply for the insurance benefits online. However, if you are covered by a private insurance company, your employer should be able to guide you as to how to file the claim for NJ temporary disability benefits

Qualifications for State Benefits

In order to have a valid claim for the Temporary Disability Insurance, you need to pay into the program through your employment and also meet the minimum gross earning requirements.

  • The only exemptions are:
  • Federal government employees
  • Optional for local government, including school district employees
  • Out-of-state employees
  • Workers that are not technically employees

If your employer is covered for this insurance, they will have to set up payroll contributions for you. On the other hand, if you believe to have been covered under the program but no payroll contributions have been made, you can still apply as there might have been an error.

If you are someone who has been unemployed just recently but have a need for the Temporary Disability Insurance, you are still eligible for the benefits and are encouraged to apply under the State or under a private insurance company.
